Esta Semana No Fue Buena

This week has been one for the books. One of the most stressful weeks I've ever had. First, last Saturday Max and I were attacked by a big dog that was off his leash. This dog picked Max up and threw him around like he was nothing and slammed into my knee, sending me to Centra Care on Sunday (y'know, my favorite place besides Solantic). Luckily the knee is just sore and Max only got a couple of scratches (don't ask me how). Then I had to deal with animal control and the owner of the dog who lives in my building. Monday I got some news on my health. Chances are I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome but I need further blood work to confirm it. Tuesday I woke up to no air conditioning, which in Florida is a death sentence. So I spent the day dealing with that. Wednesday I took Madeline back to the vet because she was losing weight and not using the litter box. They gave her an enema and laxative and nothing happened overnight so we ended up back at the vet on Thursday. Even after IV fluids and another enema, nothing happened. So I took her to a specialist on Friday who had to give her anesthesia and perform a procedure on her to get it out manually (translation-mucho dinero). So needless to say an emotional week. I tried to meditate as much as possible, eat well and keep my running schedule but I'm sure the stress wasn't great on my heart. Luckily I'm going to pick up Maddy this morning and I'm hoping for a boring weekend of cuddling and healing. If anyone needs me I'll be hiding.

On the running front, not bad. Mile repeats Tuesday, hill workout Thursday and today was my first 5 miler! My heart rate went up towards the end of the run, but totally doable. Yay for longer runs! ♥
Getting there! :)

PTSD Risk In Survivors

According to a study funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, 1 out of every 8 heart attack survivors suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This startling statistic can double the risk of having another heart attack and even death. Symptoms can include recurrent nightmares, flashbacks to the time of the attack, anxiety and avoidance of heart attack related topics and places. It's primarily rooted in trauma.

Although you may not have PTSD, it is evident in the research that survivors experience a whole host of emotional leftovers after a heart attack. Fear, depression, anxiety and anger are common reactions to a heart attack. Please don't be afraid to reach out and ask for help. Use the safe people in your life to talk and vent. There's also no shame in counseling or therapy. Take care of your emotions and you take care of your heart. ♥

Look At Me! I'm On A Bike!

This week my stress level was insane. I had my oral comps at UF which I had been studying for. So my Thursday run was a mess because my stomach was in knots. Once that was over with I was so relieved. I now am officially a doctoral candidate!

Saturday's 4 mile run was much better. Kathleen, Joe and I did 1:1s, which are way easier for me now. Then we biked for 12.63 more miles with Amy, Gloria, Betty, Greg and Chris. The Skambis clan was nice enough to lend me a bike and a helmet! *Insert cheeseball pic here*
Me...on a bike?!
I have to admit, I liked the bike riding, minus some backside pain the rest of the day. It stretched my legs and gave me a new workout experience. As Gloria said, "we don't live on the edge much." Ha. ♥
Not bad, not bad! Getting there!

Distance Makes The Heart Healthier

Running Benefits the Heart!
Great new article on the benefits of running around 20 miles per week. It saved my life, maybe it will save yours too.♥

Just Keep Swimming

Ok, this helps :) Love this lady!

Angry Rant

This week I had 3 bad runs. I haven't had a week like that in a year. I woke up late twice, missed the track altogether on Tuesday, shuffled my way through Thursday, overslept Saturday (shout out to Kathleen who waited for me) and needless to say, I'M BEAT. I'm sure it didn't help that this was also the last week of school which drains me of any energy on a regular basis, but I'm pretty discouraged. So I'm going to take the weekend to regroup and rest and we'll see what happens next week.

Inspiration

Obsessed with this blog I found, My Heart Revealed. OB-SESSED. All of these images are from the blog. ♥

First Day Back (It's Official!)

Today was my first day running again with Track Shack's Marathonfest. When the alarm went off at 4:30 am, I really wondered how I managed to do this 3 times a week for 7 months in a row. But, as soon as I got to Cady Way and peered through the dark at my amazing running buddies, it was all worth it. We ran a nice, easy pace and did 1:1s. Hard to believe that just 4 months ago I was mourning the loss of running. It really makes me thankful for this time and these friends. Half marathon here I come! ♥

It felt good logging this into dailymile.com :)
